Pardon me?

Calder can be very soft spoken. On occasion his voice turns quieter than a whisper. I understand when kids are around people they don't know very well that they may be shy. This is definitely the case for Calder, but it goes beyond that. Mulitple times a day, Hugh and I have to ask Calder to speak up. He especially likes to turn down his volume in the van. With the noise of the running vehicle and the radio on this can be especially problematic.

Conversation with Calder on the way back from Kerri's parents last week:

C: Mom, blah blah blah, blah blah blah
J: Just hold on a sec, I'll turn off the radio. . . okay, what did you say?
C: Mom, blah blah blah, blah blah blah
J: Pardon me Calder, I can't hear you.
C: Mom, blah blah blah, blah blah blah
J: Seriously, Calder you need to speak up.
C: Mom, blah blah blah, blah blah blah
J: I still can't hear you Calder. CAN YOU TALK LIKE THIS?
C: Mom, blah blah blah, blah blah blah
J: Honey, your voice didn't get any louder. IT NEEDS TO GET LOUDER (almost shouting now!)
C: (frustrated) Mom, blah blah blah, blah blah blah
J: Seriously, Baby. I can't hear what you are asking me.
C: (FINALLY raising his voice, unfortunately also crying) Yes, you can hear me Mommy. You CAN hear me.
J: (sigh) Yes, honey, now I can.

A 4 minute overtired bawlfest followed. I never did find out what he was asking me.

When I was a kid I had one of those Fisher Price cassette players with a mic on the side. Mine is long gone, but if you still have yours, I would buy it from you. I am willing to pay top dollar to hear what Calder is saying in the van!

  1. Hi. I hear your frustration. I had a student this year that just wouldn't/couldn't speak up...constant requests to have him do so, and still he didn't or wasn't able to do so. Have you checked out 'conductive' hearing loss?...it can cause a person to hear themselves/others louder than they actually are. This may be way over reacting, but with little ones, a person just never knows.

  2. Kevin ordered a piano with a microphone for Jax a couple weeks ago. When he uses it NO ONE has trouble hearing him;) you might want to look on ebay, that is where Kevin found ours.

  3. Shelley: He only seems to speak softly with Hugh and I in the van. I will keep an eye on it thought. I didn't even know about conductive hearing loss. Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks, Kelly! I may have to have a peak!

  4. Just to clarify to everyone, I think the Fisher Price cassette player was mine.
